- POAS (Profit on Ad Spend): Kâr bazlı geri dönüş.
Her değişiklik öğrenme sürecini sıfırlar.
Attribution Modelleri
- Last Click: Son tıklamaya tüm kredi — eski ve yanıltıcı.
- First Click: İlk tıklamaya tüm kredi — keşif kanallarını abartır.
- Her platform kendi dönüşümünü kendine mal eder — toplam ciro gerçekten fazla görünür.
Birincisi, her kararı veriyle almak.
Ad campaign mistakes: the 10 most common errors in Google Ads and Meta
Ad campaign mistakes are one of the biggest reasons businesses of every size in Türkiye quietly burn through their digital marketing budgets. Whether you spend 10,000 TL or 500,000 TL a month, if you make the same structural mistakes, the outcome is the same — most of your investment never comes back.
What’s more, most of these mistakes aren’t complicated. As Google Ads and Meta Ads become more "automated" every year, advertisers rely more and more on the platforms’ recommendations. Yet these automated decisions are designed to optimize the platform’s revenue, not your business’s profitability.
In this guide, we cover the 10 most common ad campaign mistakes made by brands in both e-commerce and services, how to spot them and how to fix them. For each mistake, you’ll find both a technical fix and a data-driven way to verify it.
Why Are These Mistakes So Common?
Ad platforms run on extremely complex algorithms behind simple interfaces. Performance Max, Advantage+, automated bidding strategies — all of them are sold with a "set it and forget it" promise. But these automations optimize the signals defined by the platform, not your business goals.
On top of that, ad reports are usually read inside the platforms. Google Ads shows you Google Ads results, and Meta shows you Meta results. But the real picture — which platform truly owns which order, whether the ad is profitable after margin, whether retargeting and cold audiences are cannibalizing each other — doesn’t show up in these dashboards.
That’s why most businesses repeat the same mistakes for weeks, even months. The numbers in the dashboard look good; the numbers in the bank account go down. Let’s go through these 10 mistakes one by one.
1. Setting Up Conversions Incorrectly or Incompletely
Conversion data sits at the heart of every ad optimization. The algorithm tries to find "users who convert well." But if your conversion definition is wrong, the algorithm targets the wrong users and spends your budget on traffic that looks right but doesn’t actually create value.
Common Scenarios
- Every "Buy" button click counts as a conversion — not an actual sale.
- Form submissions are marked as conversions, but spam forms are counted too.
- Phone call conversions aren’t tracked, even though 40% of conversions come by phone.
- E-commerce sales are marked as conversions, but return rates aren’t fed into the system.
How to Fix It
First, every business needs its own definition of a "real conversion." For e-commerce, this is usually an order that was delivered and not returned — not just an add-to-cart or a started checkout. In services, it’s a qualified lead: people among form submitters who actually book an appointment or accept a quote.
With Google Tag Manager, you can mark these conversions in layers. Then feed only the top-layer conversion (delivered order or qualified appointment) into campaign optimization. Keep the others as "secondary conversions" in reporting — they shouldn’t drive optimization.
2. Fixating on a Single Metric: The ROAS Fallacy
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) — revenue earned per unit of ad spend — is the most-watched metric in both Google Ads and Meta. But ROAS alone is misleading, and one of the most critical mistakes advertisers make is deciding based on ROAS only.
Why Is ROAS Misleading?
ROAS is calculated on revenue, not profit. A 5x ROAS may look great, but if your product margin is 15% and your return rate is 20%, your real margin could be negative. ROAS also comes out artificially high in retargeting campaigns — that customer was coming anyway, so the ad’s real contribution is unclear.
Which Metrics Should You Watch?
- POAS (Profit on Ad Spend): Profit-based return. Calculate this instead of ROAS.
- CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost): The real cost of winning a new customer.
- LTV/CAC ratio: Long-term customer value relative to acquisition cost.
- Incrementality: Would this sale have happened without the ad?
You can’t see these metrics inside Google Ads or Meta — because the platforms don’t know your margin, your return rate or your customer lifetime value. You can only calculate them by combining ad costs with your own sales and profit data.
3. Audience and Budget Confusion in Campaign Structure
15 campaigns in Google Ads, 20 ad sets in Meta — this kind of "over-structuring" is a common trap. Each campaign needs its own learning period, consumes its own budget and collects its own conversion data. Too many campaigns = scattered data = no campaign ever learns.
Common Examples
- Opening a separate campaign for every product category, even though conversions per campaign will drop.
- Splitting audiences (age, gender, interests) into separate ad sets — Meta now does this on its own within a single ad set.
- Distributing the daily budget randomly across ad sets — some starve, others overspend.
The Right Structure
Today’s algorithms like working with large data pools. In Google Ads, think of Performance Max asset groups by theme (e.g. "men’s clothing", "women’s clothing") — don’t create a separate asset group for every SKU. In Meta, Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns let the algorithm scan the entire audience under a single campaign.
Also, set your budget at the campaign level (CBO – Campaign Budget Optimization), not at the ad set level. This way the platform sees which ad set performs better and shifts budget there. It’s far more efficient than manual intervention.
4. Cutting the Learning Phase Short
Both Google Ads and Meta Ads enter a "learning phase" when campaigns go live. During this phase, the algorithm tries to figure out who your customers will be. For Meta, this takes roughly 50 conversions per week. For Google the number varies, but a similar principle applies.
The Most Common Mistake
Two or three days after launch, the advertiser decides "results aren’t good" and changes the budget, changes the audience, or pauses and restarts the ad. Every change resets the learning phase. That means constantly restarting the campaign and never letting it learn.
The Golden Rule
When you launch a new campaign, only fix technical errors for the first 7–14 days (pixel not firing, wrong product price, etc.). Don’t intervene on performance. After 14 days, if the campaign has collected enough conversions, start optimizing based on that data. This discipline cuts the chance of a campaign failing by more than half.
5. Testing Creatives the Wrong Way
In Meta Ads, most of the performance is determined by the creative. With the same audience and the same budget, a different image or video can deliver twice the result. Yet most advertisers either don’t test at all (launching with a single image) or test the wrong way.
Wrong Testing Methods
- Putting 10 creatives in one ad set and letting "the algorithm choose" — the budget gets spread and none collects enough data.
- Testing Image A and Image B in different campaigns — the audiences differ, so the comparison is meaningless.
- Changing the creative after 3 days because "it’s not working" — again, the learning phase is cut short.
The Right Testing Approach
Use Meta’s "Dynamic Creative" feature, or serve each creative in its own ad set to the same audience. Allocate enough budget for at least 50–100 clicks per creative. Evaluate results after 7–10 days. Move the winner into the main campaign, pause the losers and create new variations.
For creative production, AI-powered content tools make things much easier. Systems like hyWick Studio automatically generate variations of your best-performing creatives and speed up the testing cycle.
6. Making Decisions Without Understanding Attribution
A customer passes through multiple touchpoints on the way to a purchase. They search on Google, see an ad on Instagram, watch a video on TikTok, get an email a week later and finally buy. The answer to "who made this sale?" depends on which attribution model you use.
Attribution Models
- Last Click: All credit to the last click — outdated and misleading.
- First Click: All credit to the first click — overstates discovery channels.
- Linear: Equal credit to every touchpoint — not realistic, but informative.
- Data-Driven: Google’s machine-learning model — closest to accurate, but a black box.
Platforms Show Different Reports
Meta uses its own attribution model (usually 7-day click + 1-day view). Google uses its own. Whether a sale belongs to Meta or Google depends on which dashboard you look at. Because both platforms claim the same sale, the total revenue in the dashboards appears higher than your real revenue.
The solution is to use a system that combines ad data with your sales data. That way you see the "total ad spend / total real orders" ratio — far more accurate than any single platform’s report.
7. Mismanaging Brand Keywords in Search
In Google Ads, "brand keywords" — ads shown to people searching for your own company name — are a sensitive topic. They’re essential, but if mismanaged they waste budget.
Two Opposing Views
Some experts say, "people searching for my brand are already coming to me, so I won’t advertise to them." Others say, "competitors are buying my brand keyword; if I don’t bid, they’ll take the top spot." The truth lies in between: if there is competition (competitors bidding on your brand keyword), advertise. If not and you already rank #1 organically, keep a low, defensive budget only.
Points to Watch
- Keep the brand campaign separate; don’t mix it into your general campaigns.
- Report brand conversions separately — don’t let them inflate your overall ROAS.
- Don’t bid on competitor names that are registered trademarks — it creates legal issues.
8. Narrowing the Audience Unnecessarily in Meta
"Women aged 25–34, living in Istanbul, interested in fashion" — this kind of narrow targeting made sense before 2020. Since 2024, Meta’s algorithm has become very good at finding the right user within a broad audience. In fact, narrow audiences now hurt performance.
Why?
Narrow targeting = few people = little data = the algorithm can’t optimize. On top of that, pixel data has already been limited since iOS 14.5. The bigger the pool you give the algorithm, the better it learns.
The Right Approach
- Use Advantage+ Audience or open targeting.
- Keep the age range at least 20 years wide (e.g. 25–55).
- Instead of picking interests, filter your audience with the creative. For example, if you sell women’s clothing, use a creative aimed at women — the algorithm will show it to women anyway.
- For lookalike audiences, try 3–5% instead of 1% — broader, with more scale.
9. Neglecting Negative Keywords
Negative keywords are Google Ads’ most powerful yet least-used feature: a list of "don’t show my ad to people searching for these words." Most advertisers either never build this list or look at it once a year.
Typical Budget Leaks
Say you sell premium furniture. Without negative keywords, your ad shows up for searches like "cheap furniture", "second-hand furniture", "furniture rental" or "furniture jobs". Users clicking on these aren’t looking for you — but you’re paying 3–5 TL per click for them.
How to Manage Them
Open the "Search Terms Report" once a week (Google Ads → Keywords → Search terms). Add searches that don’t convert or aren’t relevant to your negative list one by one. After the first 3 months, the list grows more slowly — at that point, checking once a month is enough.
Also, know the difference between "exact match", "phrase match" and "broad match". Broad match brings a lot of traffic but burns money without a negative list. For beginners, phrase match is the safest option.
10. Reading Reports Only from Platform Dashboards
This is perhaps the most structural mistake — because it makes all the other mistakes harder to spot. Google Ads shows you what Google sees. Meta shows you what Meta sees. But none of them shows your real business — which ad brings real revenue, what the profit is, how returns affect it.
The Limits of Dashboard Reports
- Every platform claims conversions for itself — total revenue looks higher than it really is.
- Product margin, return rate and shipping cost don’t appear in the dashboard.
- Agency reports are essentially copies of platform dashboards — the same limits apply.
- Overlap between organic and paid traffic isn’t visible.
The Right Approach: Combining Data
You need to combine your ad data (Google Ads + Meta + TikTok + LinkedIn) with your sales data (Shopify, WooCommerce, Trendyol, İkas) and your site analytics (Google Analytics). Only in this combined view can you see real performance.
hyWick steps in exactly here. It brings your ad, social media and sales data together in one dashboard, and clearly reports which campaign truly drives profit and which only looks good in the dashboard. You no longer need to double-check agency reports or trust a single platform’s "self-grading" report.
Conclusion: From Systematic Mistakes to Systematic Decisions
Ad campaign mistakes are rarely accidental. Most come from accepting the platforms’ default recommendations without question, not defining conversions properly and reading reports from a single source. All 10 mistakes above can be fixed — but it takes two things.
First, making every decision with data: saying "the POAS data for the last 14 days looks like this for this campaign" instead of "my gut says this campaign isn’t working." Second, having access to the right data: a view that combines all your ad and sales data beyond the platform dashboards.
Brands that do these two things with discipline get 2–3 times more results with the same budget. The difference isn’t skill — most of it lies in "how clearly you can see the truth."
